I went to a seminar about documentary film finance and the man asked people how they described themselves when asked what they were. Apparently if we weren't prepared to call ourselves 'documentary' makers we should go and 'bake cakes'. And I'm thinking 'Don't diss the cakes - its a lot harder to produce a decent Victoria Sponge than you think.'

it definitely is - typical masculine analogy there and more than a little sexist. After all he didn't say that you should "go and fix cars" or "play football"

I can understand the importance of being definite about stating what you do, not so much for people to place you but to implicitly reinforce your own self-belief, but I'd say that calling yourself a documentary maker could be a little self-limiting whereas calling yourself a "film maker" will enable yourself to make films about everything and anything you damn well choose without restraint.
