feel so sad
I met a friend last week who is a few years older than me. She had some trouble with her eye when we met. Afterwards she went to the hospital and has been diagnosed with mallecular degeneration. I'm feeling my own mortality. I feel selfish because I ought to be thinking of her.

why feel selfish? Thinking of ones own mortality when confronted by illness is a human reaction to a situation. In any case, wandering around feeling sorry for someone because they're ill doesn't do them or you any good.
You're a good friend to people - when your friend needs you, you will drop everything to be there for her. That's what matters - not what you think about in the meantime...
